The motion picture emerged as the most popular and powerful form of entertainment in the twentieth century and continues to be so even in the second decade of the current century despite significant changes in its form and presentation. What could possibly explain the almost universal appeal of this medium of creative expression over such a long period of time? How do filmmakers negotiate the content (plot) with stylistic systems such as editing, cinematography, mise en scène, performance, in order to effectively communicate with the audience? How do certain films make the optimal use of the visual element to transcend linguistic barriers and win international recognition?
Tilt, The Film Appreciation Society of ARSD College, through its screenings, readings, and discussions, has been making an attempt to answer the above questions and more. Moreover, it tries to cultivate a genuine appreciation of cinema as an artistic form by exposing students to the classics in World cinema (including films made in different Indian languages).
TILT started with some historic interventions in film with Chaplin’s Modern Times, De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves and Von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark which were among the initial screenings. Discussions on film theory are a regular part of the curriculum aided by recommended readings on form of cinema. The Society also works collaboratively with various departmental associations and College societies to spread awareness via talks and panel discussions on various contemporary issues.
The society continues to be a vibrant cornerstone for cinematic creativity and analytical thought on campus. The society has organized a diverse array of events seamlessly bridging the gap between passive viewing and active, socially conscious filmmaking. The recent session featured an exclusive screening of “POLICY HAZAR,” an original production by TILT’s own filmmaking department.
TILT further strengthened its commitment to social impact through cinema by hosting a Green Film Review and Discussion featuring the UN documentary Nations United: Urgent Solutions for Urgent Times. The event encouraged meaningful discussions on poverty, climate change, and gender equality, highlighting the role of visual storytelling in promoting awareness and sustainable development. In collaboration with its contemporary, H.O.P.E. Society TILT also screened The Perks of Being a Wallflower, creating a safe space for over a hundred students to discuss mental health, emotional resilience, and the importance of open communication.
Beyond cinematic appreciation, direct skill intervention and career building remained a primary focus. The society orchestrated a highly impactful Filmmaking Workshop led by industry professional Kshitij Sheetak. By sharing practical insights and navigating his own artistic journey, he provided aspiring student filmmakers with a clear, actionable pathway for crafting better films and forging careers in the industry.
As the festive season began, TILT brought cinematic excitement to campus through its lively stall at the October Diwali Mela, engaging students with activities like Guess the Movie by Emojis and multi-genre quizzes. Continuing the momentum, the society partnered with the Mind Masters’ Society to host No Cannes Do, a highly competitive film quiz, followed by a Halloween horror movie screening where students embraced the spooky spirit in costumes.
TILT’s flagship festival, Tamasha, celebrates cinematic creativity. The 2026 edition featured Cinema Day that invited students to dress as characters from films and shows, while Script Wars challenged participants to collaboratively create screenplays through a live-auction team format. Afsaana – On the Spot Filmmaking Competition tested spontaneous creativity, and Alfaaz offered a platform for expression through poetry, dance, rap, monologues, and more. Its major event, ‘Quiz Quiz Hota Hai’ engaged film enthusiasts with cinematic trivia, while the Film Screening & Speaker Session featured Mohammad Waris Ansari and Utkarsh Chaturvedi, offering students valuable industry insights. Through these initiatives, TILT has undoubtedly reaffirmed its mission of empowering students within the evolving cinematic landscape.
