The Department of Political Science was instituted in 1959 along with the establishment of the College. Undergraduate programmes were introduced from its inception, followed by postgraduate courses. Mr. M.N. Anand was the founding faculty member of the department. Today, the Department is recognized as one of the most active, vibrant and innovative academic departments of the College. It is the only bilingual department, offering teaching in both Hindi and English, and is supported by a team of dedicated faculty members committed to promoting democratic values and academic excellence.
The Department currently caters to more than 480 undergraduate students and offers a dynamic learning environment through undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The faculty possesses expertise in diverse fields including Political Theory, International Relations, Indian Politics, Gender Studies, Human Rights, Governance, Security Studies and Public Administration. Faculty members have actively contributed to academic and administrative bodies of the University of Delhi and have served on the editorial boards of reputed national and international journals.
The Department is committed to providing holistic education by combining academic learning with value-based development. Its teaching philosophy emphasizes intellectual growth, critical thinking, integrity and social responsibility. Students are encouraged to actively participate in extension activities through NSS, NCC, Eco Club, Women Development Cell (WDC) and various college societies, enabling them to develop leadership qualities and civic awareness.
Research and academic engagement remain central to the Department's vision. Faculty members have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, edited books and have supervised M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars. Undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake research projects, dissertations and academic activities under the National Education Policy (NEP). The Department Association, Republica, regularly organizes debates, seminars, panel discussions, youth parliament activities, quizzes, policy dialogues and interactions with eminent academicians and public intellectuals to enrich students' academic experience.
The Department also provides an interactive learning environment through seminars, lectures, field visits, mentoring programmes and career counselling sessions. Students have consistently excelled in academics, youth parliament competitions, debates, sports and civil services preparation. Many alumni have successfully pursued higher education and established distinguished careers in academia, public service, media, law and various other professional fields.
