Our Department

Department of Botany

The Department of Botany has been in the forefront of teaching and research in plant sciences. In collaboration with the departments of zoology and chemistry it imparts teaching to students of B.Sc. (Physical Science). The faculty has expertise in the field of physiology of growth & development, plant tissue culture, morphogenesis, cytogenetic studies and plant molecular biology. These syllabi cover all aspects of botany – ranging from diversity in structure, form, development and function to systematic, basic and applied aspects of cell and molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, ecology and environment management.

The department has successfully adapted to the NEP-UGCF curriculum and offers multidisciplinary and skill-oriented courses such as Ethnobotany, Environmental Biotechnology and Management, Environmental Monitoring and Ecosystem Restoration, Fundamentals of Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, and Genetic Engineering Technologies and Applications. Faculty members actively contribute to research through publications, book chapters, dissertation guidance and DBT Star College Scheme activities. The department regularly organizes hands-on training programmes in biotechnology, bioinformatics, cytology and biochemical techniques, along with seminars, outreach activities and field visits that provide experiential learning opportunities to students.

The primary aim of providing quality education is being successfully fulfilled by the department. The unique feature of the department is its faculty which includes experts and active researchers from almost all areas of plant science. Well-equipped laboratories, ICT-enabled teaching, eco-friendly practices and active student participation in environmental awareness programmes further strengthen the academic environment of the department.

Our Objectives

To provide comprehensive education in plant sciences by fostering a thorough understanding of plant diversity, structure, function, genetics, biotechnology, ecology and environmental management, thereby nurturing scientific curiosity and critical thinking among students.

To promote research, innovation and sustainable development through advanced studies in plant physiology, tissue culture, morphogenesis, cytogenetics, molecular biology and allied disciplines, preparing students to address contemporary challenges in agriculture, biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.

To encourage experiential learning through laboratory training, field studies, environmental outreach programmes, biotechnology-based practical exposure and interdisciplinary learning opportunities, enabling students to develop scientific skills and environmental responsibility.

Our Department

Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology is dedicated to the study of animal life in all its forms, encompassing diverse fields such as animal diversity, physiology, genetics, ecology, evolution, biotechnology, public health and environmental sciences. The faculty members actively take part in various seminars, symposia and faculty development programmes to keep themselves abreast of emerging trends in biological sciences. The department also regularly organizes seminars, workshops and academic activities to enrich the teaching-learning process. The practicals are supported by excellent laboratory facilities, ICT-enabled classrooms and well-trained faculty members.

Regular field trips to create awareness about ecological and environmental issues, lectures by eminent scholars, project work, quizzes, seminars and student-centred activities are some of the methods adopted by the faculty to make learning more interesting and purposeful. The department has effectively implemented the NEP-UGCF framework and offers contemporary courses such as Nature and Wildlife Studies, Lifestyle Disorders, Animal Physiology, Insect Vectors and Diseases, Epidemiology and Public Health, Forensic Biology, Biology of Animal Cells and Evolutionary Ecology.

The department actively promotes experiential learning through hands-on training programmes under the DBT Star College Scheme in areas such as biotechnology, bioinformatics and laboratory techniques. Faculty members are engaged in research, publications and dissertation guidance, while students benefit from field visits, outreach programmes and environmental awareness initiatives. The department also encourages participation in seminars, workshops and interdisciplinary activities that enhance scientific temperament, creativity and professional competence.

The faculty members undertake continuous challenges to improve their teaching skills and remain committed to providing quality education while fostering environmental consciousness and research aptitude among students.

Moreover, Bionomie: The Department Society serves as a vibrant platform for academic interaction, scientific discussions, competitions and student engagement, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of the life sciences.

Our Objectives

To provide quality education in zoological sciences through effective teaching, practical training, field-based learning and exposure to emerging trends in biological sciences, thereby developing scientific knowledge, analytical skills and a spirit of inquiry among students.

To foster research aptitude, environmental awareness and holistic personality development by encouraging participation in seminars, workshops, project work, quizzes, outreach activities and other academic engagements, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to science and society.

To promote experiential and interdisciplinary learning through modern laboratory facilities, DBT-supported training programmes, wildlife and ecological studies, and exposure to public health and environmental issues, thereby enhancing employability and scientific competence.
