Historical Perspective
A Legacy Rooted in Service and Excellence
Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College traces its origins to the vision of Shri Sanatan Dharma Sabha (Rawalpindi), a distinguished educational and philanthropic organisation founded in 1882. For decades, the Sabha played a pivotal role in promoting education and social upliftment by establishing and managing schools and colleges in undivided India.
Following the Partition, the Sabha re-established itself in Delhi in 1952, carrying forward its enduring commitment to nation-building through education. Guided by these ideals, Sanatan Dharma College was established in August 1959 as a constituent college of the University of Delhi. In May 1968, it was renamed Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College in honour of the eminent educationist and philanthropist Lala Atma Ram.
The Birth of ARSD
Permission to establish the College was granted on 12 July 1959, and academic activities commenced in a rented building at Anand Parbat, Delhi. Dr. R. N. Rai, an eminent physicist, became the founding Principal, while Shri F. C. Mehra served as the first Chairman of the Governing Body.
The College was formally inaugurated on 3 August 1959 under the chairmanship of the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shri M. A. Ayyangar. Later that year, a 12.31-acre campus at Dhaula Kuan was acquired, and on 6 December 1959, the foundation stone of the present campus was laid by Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, then Union Home Minister.
A Tradition of Social Commitment
The College has consistently upheld the values of compassion, service, and national responsibility. During the humanitarian crisis of 1971, students and teachers actively participated in relief efforts for refugees, reflecting the institution’s commitment to social welfare and community engagement.
Throughout its journey, ARSD College has remained steadfast in fostering academic excellence while nurturing responsible citizenship and ethical leadership.
The Spirit of Sanatan
For ARSD College, Sanatan represents a timeless philosophy of continuous learning, openness to new ideas, and adherence to universal human values. It embodies the pursuit of knowledge, integrity, compassion, and duty towards society.
As reflected in the College’s early publications, a true Sanatani is one who respects tradition while embracing progress, seeks knowledge with sincerity, and contributes positively to society with courage, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility. These ideals continue to inspire the institution’s academic and cultural ethos.
College Motto
तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु
(Tejasvi Nāvadheetam Astu)
Derived from the Taittirīya Upanishad, the College motto signifies:
"May our learning be illumined with brilliance."
The motto embodies the College's enduring commitment to intellectual excellence, enlightened learning, and the holistic development of every student. It inspires the pursuit of knowledge with wisdom, integrity, and a spirit of lifelong learning, fostering individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.
Enduring Values
Since its inception, ARSD College has combined academic rigour with character formation. Inspired by the ideals of the Sanatan Dharma Sabha, the College seeks to nurture individuals who are intellectually competent, ethically grounded, socially responsible, and committed to lifelong learning.
Over the decades, this enduring vision has shaped generations of students who have excelled in academia, public service, research, entrepreneurship, and diverse professional fields while contributing meaningfully to society.
