Department of English

Our Department

The Department of English, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, established its undergraduate B.A. English [Honors] programme in 1960 and postgraduate M.A. English [Honors] in 1996. It has decades of experience in nurturing young minds, providing them with opportunities to learn from and interact with some of the brightest minds in the field, and explore the subject in the entirety of its breadth and scope.

Objectives

The English Department is committed to the inception,  the augmentation and the refinement of critical thinking among its students. Far from being a bearer of imperial socio-cultural residue, we have, in fact, turned ourselves into the preeminent engine of postcolonial consciousness. However, this does not imply that we gravitate to positions of antagonism vis-a-vis the West. Our objective is the development of a symbiotic and an inclusive sensibility which combines the best of what ‘has been thought and said.’ We believe in using any prescribed text as an excuse to engage with a galaxy of issues ranging from matrimonial proprieties during the Gupta age to issues of identity in the post 9/11 world.

Through a number of courses aimed at enhancement of English language skills, we touch the life of each student who enters the college. We understand the significance of English in the context of the various competitive examinations which  our  students undertake and we also realise that many of these youngsters do not have the same linguistic dexterity which a student of B A (Hons) English might possess. To ensure that no student feels left out, we adopt graded pedagogy, combine technology with classroom lecture, emphasise on practice and walk that extra mile whenever we must.
