Topic: “Can India be a five trillion economy?”

When: 23rd August, 2019, Friday at 10:30 am

Venue: Seminar Hall I, ARSD College, University of Delhi

Abstract :
“In the governing council meeting of NITI Aayog, PM Modi had announced the goal of making India$5 trillion economy by 2024 .Economy @5 trillion or how India can leapfrog into a $ 5 trillion economy by 2024 is the very essence of Volume 1, of the Economy Survey 2019,penned by the new Chief Economic Advisory Krishnamurthy Subramanian. Many economists and business analysts have been extensively discussing and debating whether this goal is achievable or not. In this vague pursuit of increasing total production and total consumption, we have forgotten GDP inventor Simon Kuznet’s warning against misconstruing GDP as a welfare measure. We forget that GDP is just a number game! $5 trillion economy cannot be expected to end all our economic problems unless it is accompanied by job growth, equality of opportunity, better health and educational status. The major question comes up that do we want a job producing and more equitable economy or we want growth at the hands of only a few richest?”
