Activities & Events of Academic Session 2019-20

The NSS unit is one of the most active societies of the college which strives for development of personalities of student through community service. The session began with the online registrations for being a part of NSS, about 500 students registered out of which 120 students were screened. They were allotted enrollment numbers and work diaries were distributed to them to maintain a record of the hours contributed to social service as NSS volunteer.

Orientation Programme for registered volunteers of NSS was held on 7th August 2019.The guest on the occasion was Professor Rajesh  (Department of adult, continuing education and extension, University of Delhi) in his addressal he talked about the  ROLE OF YOUTH IN SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAAN.

Plantation Drive

On “World Nature Conservation Day” i.e. 28th July’219, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs conducted a plantation drive in the San Martin Park where the officials and the media persons were all there. It was a really good step taken up by the ministry to make the city greener. “NSS ARSD” participated in big numbers in that event and excelled.

The event started at 8am sharp, wherein the officials talked to the media persons about this initiative followed by plantation, where students planted 20-25 plants in the park. The students then had an interactive session with the media.At last, all the officials talked about the initiative in detail and students got opportunities to express their opinions about this step. The event strongly delivered the message of Nature Conservation.

CLEAN INDIA

Swachtta Pakhwadawas were observed by the NSS unit of the college from 1st to 15th of August’2019 and from 16th to 31st of Januray’2020. The pakhwara began with more than 100 students, teachers and non teaching staff of the college taking the ‘swachtta oath’. Many activities were organised as part of pakhwara; a seminar on the theme of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’, awareness programmes and cleanliness drives in and around college, poster making competition on the theme of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’, effective disposal of waste and hazards of plastic and swachtta rally and door to door campaign to spread awareness about cleanliness in the market and JJ clusters of  Satyaniketan. Large number of NSS volunteers, NCC cadets, students and teachers participated in ‘Shramdaan’.

FIT INDIA

National Sports Day, on the 29th of August, celebrates the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. However, this year, the celebrations marked the beginning of a movement intended to bring out a Healthy India, A Fit India. Few volunteers went to Indira Gandhi Stadium where programme was inaugurated by our Prime Minister Honourable Narendra Modi. In his addressal to the entire audience, appreciated the ability of all those involved in making Fit India a movement from merely a concept. Focussing on the importance of PURPOSE, the goal, the aim, the DETERMINATION as well as PASSION, which will help this movement achieve great heights was also talked about.

POSHAN MAAH

NSS ARSD, observing the month of September 2019 as ‘RASHTRIYA  POSHAN MAAH’ (National nutrition month), organised a health camp, on the 23rd of September, in collaboration with INTEGRATED DISTRICT HEALTH SOCIETY (IDHS), New Delhi district.

The promotion of nutrition and health through action and awareness among the students was done, with the idea of “PREVENT, TREAT, CONTROL” in mind.The key activities of the event were TEST , TREAT and TALK.Blood samples of about 350 students and 50 non-teaching staff were collected.The samples were tested and a compiled report of each and everyone was presented.This was followed by a talk, based on the results of the blood tests and respective solutions to all were given.Not only the students, but even the teaching and non teaching staff took part in the health camp very actively, thus, ensuring it’s grand success.

NO TOBACCO DAY

No Tobacco Day was celebrated to create awareness about the bad effects of tobacco on 29th January 2020 by creating a space for slogan writing on the ill effects of tobacco where students wrote slogans and created awareness.

NSS WEEK

The NSS WEEK celebrations in ARSD College began on 24th September’2019 with high levels of enthusiasm. Celebration of 150th birthday of Gandhi ji and treading his principles were the main aim of week.To begin with, the aim of pollution free India and celebrating the Gandhian ideology, a cycle rally took place from MANDI HOUSE to INDIA GATE. This was followed by the volunteers gathering near the main notice board and with an addressal to all, the NSS week was declared open by our respected Principal sir. “SWACHCH BHARAT SWASTH BHARAT” with this slogan, the PADYATRA began, along with SHRAMDAAN (PICK UP PLASTIC). The first day ended with a nukkad natak, which focussed on the ill-effects of plastic and the natak was successful in delivering it’s message.

Celebrating the second day of the NSS week on 25th September , a talk on HIV AIDS Awareness in collaboration with Delhi State Aids Control Society, a bilingual debate competition and a slogan writing competition were organised . The speaker for the talk was, Mr. Ravi Kumar Tyagi, an official at the Delhi State Aids Control society. His discourse was mostly on the Discrimination faced by HIV positive individuals in society because of the association of AIDS as a  taboo topic. This was followed by the bilingual debate competition on the topic, IS GANDHIAN PHILOSOPHY STILL RELEVANT IN THE 21st CENTURY. The competition was a kaleidoscope of various opinions, thoughts , ideas and perspectives. The slogan writing competition, which took place simultaneously, attracted many students from the college, who showed their artistic skills as well as creativity, on the topic, Bringing out the relevance of Gandhiji’s teachings.

Celebrating the 3rd Day of the NSS WEEK, on the 26th of September, NSS ARSD organised a SHRAMDAAN (cleanliness drive) from Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus Metro Station to Dhaula Kuan Metro Station. The volunteers ensured that not just the college, but even its surroundings were absolutely clean. This was followed by a seminar on new education policy, which was attended by the volunteers. An enriching experience, as it was, the volunteers got to know the major policy changes and their effects. The last event for the day 3 was Cultural Activities at Sevadeep. A sight for sore eyes, the little children, were extremely excited for their performances. First up, we had a drawing competition. This was followed by the performances they prepared, including recital of poems, singing songs and dancing. The day ended on a high note, as the children received prizes for their efforts and also got a little treat of snacks.

Celebrating the NSS WEEK, on the 4th day, 27th september , there was a swachhta rally organised at Shri Ram JJ Camp, where students distributed jute bags to people and make them aware of the ill-effects of plastic and how it is getting banned. This was followed by a seminar conducted by NSS on the topic ROLE OF LEGISLATION IN WOMEN EMPOWERMENT by DR. ABHA YADAV. It was very informative, as she told us about all the legislatures supporting any kind of harrassment, and she addressed volunteers questions too. The day ended with a movie screening, GANDHI within the college campus for volunteers, depicting the life of Gandhiji and his struggles.

On 28th September , the 5th day of the NSS week a talk was organised on the celebration of 150th anniversary of Gandhi ji. The speaker for the talk was Shri Arvind Mohan a Sr. Journalist and Gandhian thinker. He spoke on the relevance of Gandhi in the contemporary world. The talk was extremely informative and provided an insight into the life and thinking of the great man, Gandhi.

With the aim of “Dream India, Clean India”, NSS ARSD, on the last day of NSS Week, organised a Cleanliness Drive at Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, on the 30th of September. The volunteers assembled at the Fort itself, and started the drive, attracting a large number of people. Spreading awareness and motivating everyone around, the volunteers made sure the message of cleanliness reaches one and all.The NSS WEEK ended on a high note and all in all the NSS WEEK was a great success.

GERMAN AMBASSADOR

“Power is gained by sharing knowledge, not hoarding it. ”

Keeping in view the same, the Delhi School of Transnational Affairs, University of Delhi, presented the Ambassadorial Lecture Series, with H.E. Mr. Walter J Lindner, the German Ambassador to India. Held at the Convention Hall, Viceregal lodge, University of Delhi on the 25th of September, 2019, the session was on “Public diplomacy: leaving the cage” and NSS ARSD got the wonderful opportunity to attend this session.The major points of discussion included the importance of International solidarity,  issues of global strata, and most importantly, the heated topic of climate change.Mr. Walter  emphasised on the active youth participation to eradicate these global issues. He urged the youngsters to take these problems seriously and make the best use of their active minds to tackle the world problems. He focused on how we should keep our values intact and not lose our authenticity, in order to bring out the best of the humankind’s potential.

TAJIKISTAN DELEGATION

21st October’2019 was, indeed, a special experience for the volunteers of NSS ARSD.Hosting the visiting delegation from Tajikistan, NSS ARSD truly embodied the spirit of “Athiti Devo Bhava”, giving a rather warm and unforgettable experience to our guests.The group was welcomed with an address by V.K. Arora sir and a beautiful performance by Kalashree, the college’s Indian Dance Society.The Chief of the delegation seemed to really enjoy the NSS clap and tried to learn it, aided by the volunteers.The event ended on a high note and a vote of thanks by our Programme Officer, Dr. Anjani Singh.The highly successful event was well lauded by the entire delegation and NSS ARSD, yet again, truly challenged it’s heights.

DRUG ABUSE

“DON’T LET YOURSELF TO BE A SLAVE OF CHEMICALS”

NSS ARSD in collaboration with NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL DEFENCE had organised a ONE DAY SESITIZATION PROGRAM on 13th January,2020  with aim to spread awareness for prevention of drug abuse among youths. Dr. Rajesh professor in department of adult and continuing education and extension, University of delhi shared a lot of information about the stages and further consequences of taking drugs. Dr. Vandana sisodia gave some information related to various organisations working towards the cause.  Students from different colleges were invited to attend this informative seminar.</p;>

VOTER'S DAY and ELECTORAL LITERACY CLUB

On National Voter’s day i.e on 25th January 2020 voter’s pledge was administered by the Principal Sir to all the teachers and students at the republic day function organised in college. All the NSS volunteers, NCC Cadets, students and teachers  present at the function took the oath.Several other activities are also done under ELC including quiz, awareness rally, poster making competition, nukkad natak and much more, through this NSS unit is trying to spread the importance of voting in a democratic government where government is of the people, by the people and for the people.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

Blood Donation Camp was held in association with Lion’s Club on 29th January 2020. Students and Staff of the college contributed to this noble cause by donating total 111 units of blood was donated in the blood donation camp conducted on 29th January 2020. Few students from other college also contributed to this noble cause.

SEVADEEP

NSS Unit of the college has adopted Sri Ram JJ Camp, a slum near to college. Apart from the activities conducted in slum mentioned above, about 105 NSS volunteers are part of the education team which has undertaken the task of guiding young minds under the name of SEVADEEP. These volunteers have been devoting 2 hours daily towards the education of these children.They  are working really hard to nurture and polish their reading, writing, speaking, arithmetic and other skills and a significant improvement is seen.

DIWALI IN SEVADEEP

NSS ARSD celebrated Diwali with the children of  Sevadeep on 25th October’19. On this special occasion few competitions took place like TASVEER SE TAQDEER TAK. In this, children displayed there dreams with the help of newspaper cuttings.The sheets and dream maps almost startled the volunteers, and made them realise that those young minds will definitely do something big in life. Another was TALENT HUNT. In this we asked the children to showcase the talent they think they possess. Performers varied from poets to singers to dancers to actors. They presented it with so perfection that even the judges for the day were astonished.Gifts were given in both competitions to first three rank holders. Apart from this,  as we all know that DIWALI is a festival of sweets and gifts and thus, we didn’t leave any hands empty. Chocolates and stationary kits were given to each and every child and a message of SAY NO TO CRACKERS was also spread.Every child dispersed with a huge smile, which made us smile too!

CHILDREN'S DAY CELEBRATION IN SEVADEEP

NSS ARSD organised various fun activities for the children of our adopted slum including frog race, book balancing, ball in the glass and more.Everyone was provided with a holiday homework booklet, according to their class and syllabus, and were asked to complete the same. Day was marked on a high note by distributing wafers and drinks to all and seeing a big smile on each face.

ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS IN SEVADEEP
 

NSS ARSD on 18th January’2020 successfully conducted an event on road safety to make the children of our adopted slum Shri Ram JJ Camp aware about the traffic rules. We saw a good strength of about forty children.Several activities were conducted to give them praticial knowledge. Activity like ‘Little hand impression’ was done in which hand printing was done and analogous traffic light was made. Another activity was a ‘Safety Run’ in which they have to follow the command during the race by observing the signal volunteers showed them using coloured sheets. Last but not the least ‘Importance of road safety’ was also taught to them in which they drawed the important signals and volunteers taught the importance of them followed by a small movie on road safety.Event came to and end by bringing smile on each face and giving them refreshments. At last a small discussion took place in which each child answered questions regarding traffic rules.

REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION IN SEVADEEP

NSS ARSD unit celebrated 71st Republic Day with the children of our adopted slum, SHRI RAM JJ CAMP. Theme for the event was “Humara Maan, Samvidhaan”. With the spirit to evoke patriotism and give respect to our freedom fighters, event began with National Anthem followed by a parade which was done by slum children.Brag our flag event took place in which children made flags with the help of ice-cream sticks. For more involvement few fun activities took place. One was, Stack your money in which they made pyramid of coins over bottle. Another activity was ‘Grab it to win’ which was just another version of musical chair game.Event came to an end with an informative session under which volunteers explained them the reason for celebration and importance of Constitution. Refreshments were distributed in the end and dispersed them with a big smile.

MILESTONES

  • ARSD became the only college in the University of Delhi to conduct programme for the inclusion of transgender. A seminar was conducted with CDF, Badlaav-ek behtar kal ki taraf in which NAAZ JOSHI, the three times consecutive title holder of “Miss World Diversity” came.-It conducted a programme on substance abuse in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) and became the Nodal College for the same.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  •  Carrying forward the legacy of ‘NOT ME, BUT YOU’ we are proud to announce that our Vice-President Mr Sanju was selected for the Pre-Republic Day Camp.
  • Our another dedicated volunteer, Sumit Kumar was selected for the National Youth Festival’ 2020 which was held in Lucknow.

Their  dilligency and meticulous efforts sets an example for all the volunteers. Be it day, be it night, they never sought their own conveniences. Their dedication along with a profound character have always been a jubilant experience.

  • On the occasion of world AIDS day NSS ARSD was awarded with the best Red Ribbon club by Ministry of Health and Welfare, GOI. This award given by Honorable Minister Dr Harshvardhan. Our program officer Dr. Anjani Singh received the award on the behalf of NSS ARSD.
  • In the history of NSS ARSD, for the very first time we conducted a seven day special camp in our college from 24th December’2019 to 30th December’2020. It was inaugurated by the DU coordinator of NSS Capt. Parminder Sehgal. Theme for the camp was “Youth for better environment.” Doubtlessly, it will leave an impression, not to be forgotten.

 NSS ACTIVITIES OF THE SESSION 2017-2018

Orientation Programme for registered volunteers of NSS was held on 16 August 2017. The guest on the occasion was Dr Amit Tuteja, Founder and CEO of Connecting Dreams Foundation and Dr G.K.Jha. Dr Amit Tuteja threw light on the the work that CDF is doing and What CDF ARSD chapter is trying to achieve. The Orientation Programme was followed by a poster making competition on the theme ‘Disability is not inability’ which was sponsored by the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. Three Prizes of Rs 10k, 5k and 3k were announced. The winners of the competition received the prizes on 5thsep 2017 on the occasion of spinal cord injury day celebrated at Talkatora Stadium.

The Principal of the College Dr.G.K.Jha and the president of the Rotary Club Dr K KAnand (Retired Associate Professor ARSD College) inaugurated the drive.140 saplings were planted by the volunteers on this occasion. The volunteers moreover pledged to take care of the sapling they planted.

NSS Week was observed by the NSS unit from 18 Sep 2017 to 23 Sep 2017.One day workshop on ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse Among the Youth’ was held on 18 September 2017 in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) to sensitise the students of various colleges of south campus. Mr Manoj Hatoj, in-charge-NCDAPalong with his team was also present. About 170 students participated in this training programme from variouscolleges. A series of lectures and interactive sessions were held by eminent social workers and academicians related to the field. They discussed the various terminologies, threats and risks related to the problem of drug abuse.The students from various colleges participated enthusiastically with all the speakers and among themselves and also suggested solutions to some problems discussed. In continuation with the theme of first day an  inter college debate competition on ‘Is drug abuse a disease or choice?’ was held on 20 September 2017 in which large number of students from different colleges of Delhi participated. A Poem recitation competition for the children below 14 years of Sri Ram JJ Camp was held on 19 September 2017, the prize winners were given prizes.Preventive Health Screening Camp was organised for the residents of the Sri Ram JJ Camp in collaboration with Apollo Tele Health Services free of cost in their locality. A large number of people of the locality took benefit of the camp organised.  A discussion among the NSS Volunteers on the alternative NSS Motto was held on 22-09-2017 as directed by NSS DU Centre . The students gave their alternative motto and explained why they think so. On the last day of NSS week i.e23 September 2017NSS daywas celebrated by organising a workshop on road safety in collaboration with Delhi Traffic Police. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Manoj Kumar, ASI Delhi Police. More than 150 students attended this workshop. His talk was very effective in which he shared very important information, statistics and rules with students for the safety of their lives.The talk was followed by the screening of the motivational movie ‘Pursuit of Happiness’.

An interaction session was held on 12 October 2017 with  MissTanushreePareek. She is the first woman combat officer to be commissioned in the 51-year history of the BSF. She was welcomed by our principal Dr. G.K. Jha, Ms Swati PO NSS and Dr Anamika Prasad convener women development cell.  She gave a very inspirational talk to students and motivated the students to participate in the Run for Martyrs and be a part of the citizens paying tribute to the martyrs.

RashtriyaEktaDiwas on birth anniversary of SardarVallabhbhai Patel was celebrated on 31 October 2017to pay our respect to him for his contribution towards the building of Nation.  A non competitive Unity run which was flagged off by Dr. G.K.Jha, Principal of the college was organized on this occasion. Dr. G.K.Jha , Principal of the college also spoke on the occasion and encouraged the students to understand their responsibilities as the citizen of the country. He administered the oath for unity to all NSS volunteers and teachers present. An introduction on Sardar Patel and his contributions was given by Dr.S.C.Jha, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science. Students also participated enthusiastically on this occasion by expressing their views on Relevance and Importance of Sardar in Today’s India, reciting poems on theme of Unity and singing patriotic songs. At the end doordarshan Documentary on Life and Time of SardarVallabhbhai Patel was screened.?

Sensitisation Programme on ‘Substance Abuse, Youth and Higher Education’ on 1 November 2017 in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment). Mr AnandKatoch, Director NISD was the chief guest at this occasion.Mr Manoj Hatoj,Deputy Director,Ms Preeti, consultant, Dr Rajesh, Professor at Department of adult and continuing education, University of Delhi and Dr SuneelVatsayan, chairperson NADA foundation were present at the occasion. More than 150 students from various colleges of University of Delhi participated in this programme. In the afternoon session an inter college painting competition was held on the theme ‘Anti Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking’. Students of various colleges participated enthusiastically in the competition and created amazing thought provoking paintings.

Five of our NSS volunteers got the opportunity to work as volunteers at World book fair that was held at PragatiMaidan from 6 January 2018 to 14 January 2018. The event was a mega success with coordinated efforts of the members and National book Trust officials

National Youth daywas celebrated on 12-01-2017. The theme this year was the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. On this occasion a talk was held on ‘Value Education and Success in Life’ by Dr. S Lakshmi Devi ex- principal of Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for women, which was very well attended by all the teachers and students of the college. Her talk was very interesting filled with interesting stories from mythological books and teachings of hindu scriptures. Students also expressed their views on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and he being the ideal role model for the youth of the country.

On National Voter’s dayi.e on 25th January 2018 voter’s pledge was administered by the Principal of the College to all the teachers and students at the republic day function organised at college. All the NSS volunteers, NCC Cadets, students and teachers  present at the function took the oath. On 29th January 2018 NSS unit of the college in collaboration with Delhi Traffic Police and Samsung organised a Road Safety Awareness Programme. The team of samsung screened various videos on road safety awareness, message from Minister of Road and Transport Shri Nitin Gadkari and Traffic Police Personnel. Street Play on the theme of road safety was also performed several times to create awareness. Quiz on the theme of road safety was organised for the college students and the prizes were sponsored by Samsung – one samsung phone and 4 bluetooth speakers.

Blood Donation Camp was held in association with Lion’s Club on 26th March 2018. Students and Staff of the college contributed to this noble cause by donating total 101 units of blood was donated in the blood donation camp conducted on 26 march 2018. 4 students from other college also contributed to this noble cause. units of blood.

New Initiatives

Apart from the activities conducted in slum mentioned above, about 50 NSS volunteers are part of the education team which has undertaken the task of guiding young minds under the name of SEVADEEP. These volunteers have been devoting 2 hours daily towards the education of these children since 6 September 2017. They  are working really hard to nurture and polish their reading, writing, speaking, arithmetic and other skills and a significant improvement is seen. To encourage their talent a poem recitation competition was held on 19 sep 2017 and an elocution competition on the  occasion of Children’s day. On the occasion of National Integration Day a documentary on SardarVallabhbhaipatel was shown to them.
  • College has a MoU with JAAGRUTI™ Waste Paper Recycling Services for recycling the paper waste of the college. During the cleanliness drives in college about 2 tonnepaper waste was collected from various departments and office which was given to them. College received reams of A4 sheets in return of the recycled paper.
  • With an objective to bring a positive change in the lives of a few children, Connecting Dreams Foundation- ARSD Chapter began it’s initial journey by adopting the SDMC Primary School. Improving children’s quality of life, their interpersonal and analytical skills and inculcating ethics in their behaviour were some of the main aspirations of the project. In order to achieve them the team set up a library in the school,they  conducted various reading sessions, game playing sessions with the children so as to improve their english reading and communication skills and to make them aware of the benefits that physical activities provides. They also strived to fulfil the dreams of these kids by conferring them the small things that they wished they had. Out of some 76 dreams that  were collected students were able to fulfill 45 and hope to attain the rest.

Personal Achievement

One of our student Khyati of B.Com(P) 3rd year was selected from about 120 students for the 10 day Pre-Republic Day Camp North Zone from 25.10.2017- 3.11.2017 at CCSHAU Hissar, Haryana.She was selected for the republic day parade camp which was held from 1st January 2018 to 31st January 2018 and participated in the republic day parade.
